"Tener que + infinitive" (having to do something)

In Spanish, to express obligation or necessity, we use tener que + infinitive. This is one of the most useful structures at the airport.

The verb tener conjugates like this in the present tense:

  • Yo tengo que → I have to
  • Tú tienes que → You have to
  • Él/Ella tiene que → He/She has to
  • Nosotros tenemos que → We have to
  • Ellos/Ellas tienen que → They have to

Example: "Tienes que facturar el equipaje." → "You have to check in the luggage."

Example: "Tenemos que pasar el control." → "We have to go through security."

Procedural vocabulary at the airport

At the airport, actions follow a specific order. Here are the key steps:

1. Facturar el equipaje → Check in the luggage 2. Pasar el control de seguridad → Go through security 3. Ir a la puerta de embarque → Go to the boarding gate 4. Esperar en la cola → Wait in the queue 5. Embarcar → Board

Example: "Primero tienes que facturar, luego pasar el control." → "First you have to check in, then go through security."

आम गलतियाँ

  • Tengo facturar el equipaje
    Tengo que facturar el equipaje

The word que is required between tener and the infinitive.

  • Voy a la puerto de embarque
Voy a la puerta de embarque

Gate is puerta (feminine), not puerto (port/harbour).

  • Mis equipajes están aquí
    Mi equipaje está aquí

Equipaje is uncountable in Spanish; use the singular form.

  • Tienes que facturar tus maletas en el control
Tienes que facturar tus maletas en el mostrador

You check in luggage at the counter (mostrador), not at security (control).

  • El vuelo tiene un retraso de dos hora
El vuelo tiene un retraso de dos horas

Hora must be plural (horas) when preceded by a number greater than one.
