In Spanish, nationalities are adjectives that must agree in gender with the person:

Example: "Él es español." → "He is Spanish."
Example: "Ella es francesa." → "She is French."

Most nationality adjectives follow this pattern:

To say where you are from, use ser de:

To say where you live, use vivir en:

~~Yo soy de español~~
Yo soy español
Use ser + nationality directly, without de. Ser de is for countries: Soy de España.
~~Ella es españolo~~
Ella es española
The feminine of español is española, not españolo.
~~Hablo español y inglés~~
Hablo español e inglés
Before words starting with i- or hi-, use e instead of y.
~~Yo vivo a Madrid~~
Yo vivo en Madrid
In Spanish, vivir uses en (not a) for cities and countries.
~~Soy de francesa~~
Soy francesa
Do not mix ser de + nationality. Say Soy francesa or Soy de Francia.
