The Periphrastic Future: Ir + Infinitive
The easiest way to talk about future plans in Portuguese is ir (to go) + infinitive. This works like English "going to."
Formation
- Eu vou jantar fora. — I'm going to eat out.
- Ela vai viajar amanhã. — She's going to travel tomorrow.
- Nós vamos sair no sábado. — We're going out on Saturday.
Making suggestions with Vamos
- Vamos ao cinema? — Shall we go to the cinema?
- Vamos jantar fora! — Let's eat out!
Example: "No próximo sábado, vou encontrar-me com amigos. Vamos jantar num restaurante novo."
Accepting and declining
- Boa ideia! / Claro! — Great idea! / Of course!
- Não posso, desculpa. — I can't, sorry.
