Cultural Differences – Comparatives and Contrast Connectors
To discuss cultural differences, Polish uses comparatives and contrast connectors.
Comparatives:
- bardziej + adjective (more): bardziej otwarty (more open)
- mniej + adjective (less): mniej formalny (less formal)
- -szy / -iejszy endings: ciekawszy (more interesting), szybszy (faster)
Contrast connectors:
- podczas gdy – while / whereas
- natomiast – however / whereas (mid-sentence)
- z jednej strony... z drugiej strony – on one hand... on the other hand
- mimo że – even though / despite
Example:
- W Polsce witamy się przez uścisk dłoni, natomiast w innych krajach całują się w policzek. (In Poland we greet with a handshake, whereas in other countries they kiss on the cheek.)
