Korean's vocabulary today is a layered palimpsest of history. Roughly 60% of Korean vocabulary is 한자어 (Sino-Korean), inherited from centuries of Chinese cultural influence. 순우리말 (pure Korean words) are the native layer: 하늘 (sky), 물 (water), 사람 (person). Then comes 외래어 (naturalized foreign words) — mostly from English: 컴퓨터, 스마트폰, 커피. Understanding etymology unlocks vocabulary learning: knowing that 학교 (school) shares the 학 (學/學習) root with 학생, 학습, 대학 lets you learn dozens of words at once. 훈민정음, created by King Sejong in 1443, revolutionized Korean literacy. Before it, only the educated class could read and write using 이두 or Classical Chinese. Modern 신조어 (neologisms) often blend these layers: 인싸 (insider, from English "insider"), 갓벽 (god-perfect). Tracing these layers reveals not just language but Korean history itself.
