# The Korean healthcare system

Korea uses 건강보험 (National Health Insurance), which covers most residents. At a clinic (의원) you pay a small fee; hospitals (병원) cost more.

Key phrase for receiving treatment: -을/를 받다:

  • 치료를 받아야 해요. → I need to receive treatment.

For expressing cause: -(으)로 인해 (due to):

  • 독감으로 인해 결근했어요. → I was absent from work due to the flu.

System navigation: 먼저 일반의에게 가세요 (First go to a GP), 전문의에게 소개받아야 해요 (You need a referral for a specialist), 응급실에 가야 해요 (I need to go to the emergency room).

The Korean health system is efficient — many appointments are same-day. Use 예약하다 to book in advance.

    -(으)로 인해 (due to) requires the instrumental particle 으로/로, not 이.

  • 예약을 해야 해요 먼저
    먼저 예약을 해야 해요

    Sequential adverbs like 먼저 (first) come at the beginning of the clause.

  • 보험이 있는데 없어요
    보험이 있어요 / 보험이 없어요

    Don't combine 있는데 and 없어요 in one phrase — choose whether you have it or not.

  • 응급실 가야 해요
    응급실에 가야 해요

    Destination/location nouns need the directional particle 에: 응급실에 가야 해요.
