Narrating Events with Sequence Connectors
When telling a story in Korean, sequence words help you link events in order. The most important ones are:
- 먼저 — first of all
- 그리고 — and / and then
- 그 다음에 — after that / next
- 마지막으로 — finally / lastly
Example story:
- 먼저 아침을 먹었어요. — First, I ate breakfast.
- 그리고 지하철을 탔어요. — And then I took the subway.
- 그 다음에 친구를 만났어요. — After that, I met a friend.
- 마지막으로 집에 돌아왔어요. — Finally, I came back home.
갑자기 (suddenly) adds drama to a story:
- 갑자기 비가 왔어요. — Suddenly it rained.
These connectors always come at the beginning of a new clause, separated by a comma or pause.

आम गलतियाँ
그리고 나서 먼저 먹었어요먼저 먹었어요. 그리고 나서...먼저 (first) must come before 그리고 나서 (after that); sequence words mark the order
마지막에 집에 왔어요마지막으로 집에 왔어요마지막으로 is the sequence adverb (finally); 마지막에 means at the last moment
갑자기에 비가 왔어요갑자기 비가 왔어요갑자기 is an adverb and does not take the particle 에
그 다음 친구를 만났어요그 다음에 친구를 만났어요그 다음에 requires 에 to function as a time/sequence connector
버스 놓쳤어요를버스를 놓쳤어요Object marker 를 goes after the object 버스, not after the verb
