Passato prossimo + da

In Italian, to express an action that started in the past and is still ongoing in the present, you use the present tense (or passato prossimo) + da + time expression.

Unlike English which uses "for" + duration or "since" + point in time, Italian uses da for both:

  • Ho la tosse da 3 giorni → I have had a cough for 3 days
  • Mi fa male la testa da lunedì → My head has been hurting since Monday
  • Ho la febbre da ieri sera → I have had a fever since last night

Structure

  • Verb in the present tense + da + time reference
  • da can be followed by a number of days (3 giorni), a day (lunedì), or a moment (ieri)

More examples

  • Non dormo bene da una settimana → I haven't been sleeping well for a week
  • Ho mal di stomaco da stamattina → I've had a stomachache since this morning
  • Tossisco da tre giorni → I have been coughing for three days

This structure is essential at the doctor's to specify how long you have had symptoms.

वाक्यांश

  • Mi fa male la testaSaying you have a headache
  • Ho la tosse da tre giorniIndicating how long a symptom lasts
  • Non mi sento beneSaying you do not feel well
  • Dove fa male?Asking where the pain is
  • Ho bisogno di una ricettaAsking for a prescription
  • Può darmi qualcosa per...?Asking for a specific medication
  • Da quanto tempo ha questi sintomi? To ask how long symptoms have been present
  • Sono allergico a...To inform the doctor about allergies

आम गलतियाँ

  • Ho la tosse per tre giorni
Ho la tosse da tre giorni

For ongoing duration up to the present, use 'da', not 'per'

  • Mi fa male il mio testa
    Mi fa male la testa

Body parts use the definite article, not the possessive adjective

  • Ho dolore da tre giorni fa
    Ho dolore da tre giorni

With 'da', you don't add 'fa'. 'Ho dolore da tre giorni' is complete

  • Ho il mal di testa da ieri
Ho mal di testa da ieri

'Mal di testa' does not take an article when used with 'ho'

  • Ho il febbre alta
    Ho la febbre alta

Febbre is feminine: la febbre, not il febbre

  • Mi sento non bene
    Non mi sento bene

The negation non goes before the reflexive verb (non mi sento)
