Nationalities and the indefinite article (un/una)
In Italian, nationalities are adjectives and must agree in gender with the person they describe.
Common nationalities — masculine → feminine:
- italiano → italiana (Italian)
- spagnolo → spagnola (Spanish)
- tedesco → tedesca (German)
- americano → americana (American)
- russo → russa (Russian)
- cinese → cinese (Chinese — invariable!)
- francese → francese (French — invariable!)
- inglese → inglese (English — invariable!)
Notice that nationalities ending in -ese do not change between masculine and feminine. Also, unlike in English, nationalities in Italian are not capitalized unless they start a sentence.
The indefinite article (a/an):
- Masculine: Before consonant → un (un ragazzo); Before s+consonant, z, ps, gn → uno (uno studente); Before vowel → un (un amico)
- Feminine: Before consonant → una (una ragazza); Before s+consonant, z, ps, gn → una (una studentessa); Before vowel → un' (un'amica)
Three ways to express origin: 1. Sono + nationality → "Sono italiano." (I am Italian.) 2. Sono di + city → "Sono di Roma." (I am from Rome.) 3. Vengo da + city/country → "Vengo da Parigi." (I come from Paris.)
💬 Esempio: "Sono francese. Vengo da Parigi." → "I am French. I come from Paris."
💬 Esempio: "Sono uno studente italiano." → "I am an Italian student."
💬 Esempio: "Lei è tedesca? No, è americana." → "Is she German? No, she is American."
Tip: When stating your nationality alone (without a noun), you do not use the article: "Sono italiano" (not "Sono un italiano"). But when a noun follows, use the article: "Sono un ragazzo italiano."
