Past Tense in Hindi
Hindi past tense works differently from English. For intransitive verbs (no object), the verb agrees with the subject:
- मैं गया (main gayaa) — I went (male speaker)
- मैं गई (main gayi) — I went (female speaker)
For transitive verbs (with object), Hindi uses the ergative construction — the subject takes ने (ne) and the verb agrees with the object:
- उसने खाना खाया — He ate food (verb agrees with खाना, masculine)
- उसने चाय पी — She drank tea (verb agrees with चाय, feminine)
कल (kal) means both "yesterday" AND "tomorrow" — context tells you which!
Common past forms:
- जाना → गया/गई (went)
- करना → किया/की (did)
- खाना → खाया/खाई (ate)
- देखना → देखा/देखी (saw)

आम गलतियाँ
मैंने गयामैं गयाIntransitive verbs (like जाना) never take ने — only transitive verbs use ने
