Introducing Yourself in Hindi
Asking someone's name:
Hindi has two levels of formality:
- Informal (friends, peers): तुम (tum) — "you"
- Formal (elders, strangers): आप (āp) — "you"
💬 Informal: "तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?" (tumhārā nām kyā hai?) → "What is your name?"
💬 Formal: "आपका नाम क्या है?" (āpkā nām kyā hai?) → "What is your name?" (polite)
Answering — मेरा नाम ... है:
💬 "मेरा नाम सारा है।" (merā nām Sārā hai.) → "My name is Sara."
Possessives agree with noun gender:
Hindi possessives change based on the noun they describe:
- मेरा नाम (merā nām) — my name (नाम is masculine)
- मेरी किताब (merī kitāb) — my book (किताब is feminine)
For now, just remember: मेरा नाम for "my name".
