Register switching in German
A C2 speaker must be able to move fluidly between formal and informal registers depending on the situation. In German, the distance between registers is particularly pronounced.
From formal to informal — the same idea:
- Formal: Ich möchte Sie darauf aufmerksam machen, dass... → I would like to draw your attention to the fact that...
- Standard: Ich wollte Ihnen sagen, dass... → I wanted to tell you that...
- Informal: Hey, pass auf, ... → Hey, watch out, ...
Administrative register (Amtsdeutsch):
- Hiermit wird Ihnen mitgeteilt, dass... → You are hereby notified that...
- Dem Antrag wird stattgegeben. → The application is granted.
Register markers:
- Formal/informal address: Sie/du immediately signals the register
- Lexical choice: Fahrzeug (formal) vs Auto (standard) vs Karre (colloquial)
- Modal particles: halt, eben, mal → typical of spoken register
