Technology and ethics in German uses relative clauses with was and worüber for abstract references.
Relative clauses with was: Used when the antecedent is an entire clause, or indefinite pronouns (alles, etwas, nichts):
- Das ist etwas, was mich beunruhigt. (That is something that worries me.)
- Alles, was mit KI zu tun hat, ist kontrovers. (Everything related to AI is controversial.)
- Er sammelt Daten, was viele Menschen stört. (He collects data, which bothers many people.)
Relative clauses with wo(r)- compounds: When referring back to a thing with a preposition:
- Das ist ein Thema, worüber wir diskutieren müssen. (That is a topic we must discuss.)
- Das ist etwas, woran ich nicht gedacht habe. (That is something I had not thought of.)
- Das ist ein Problem, wofür es keine einfache Lösung gibt. (That is a problem for which there is no simple solution.)
Key rule: Use was when there is no preposition. Use wo(r)+preposition when a preposition is needed (worüber, woran, wofür, etc.).
