Modal Verbs: wollen, sollen, dürfen
After müssen and können (previous lesson), here are three more essential modal verbs.
wollen — to want
Ich will eine neue Stelle finden. — I want to find a new position.
Er will Ingenieur werden. — He wants to become an engineer.
sollen — should (advice)
Du sollst deinen Lebenslauf schicken. — You should send your CV.
Was soll ich machen? — What should I do?
dürfen — to be allowed to
Hier darf man nicht rauchen. — You are not allowed to smoke here.
Darf ich eine Frage stellen? — May I ask a question?
Reminder: structure
The modal verb is conjugated in 2nd position, the main verb stays as infinitive at the end.
Ich will mich bei dieser Firma bewerben.
