Describing Nature with the Senses
On a walk, describe what you perceive with your senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling.
Perception verbs:
- Ich sehe die Berge. (I see the mountains.)
- Ich höre die Vögel. (I hear the birds.)
- Ich rieche die Blumen. (I smell the flowers.)
- Ich fühle den Wind. (I feel the wind.)
Describing a landscape:
- Der Fluss ist wunderschön. (The river is beautiful.)
- Die Wiese ist grün und groß. (The meadow is green and large.)
- Die Bäume sind sehr alt. (The trees are very old.)
Expressing impressions:
- Es riecht nach Blumen. (It smells of flowers.) — riechen nach + dative
- Es klingt wie Musik. (It sounds like music.)
- Es sieht wunderschön aus. (It looks beautiful.) — aussehen
Combining with wenn:
- Wenn ich im Wald spaziere, höre ich die Vögel. (When I walk in the forest, I hear the birds.)

Die Blumen riechen nach gut.Die Blumen riechen gut.«Riechen» + adjective means «to smell (good/bad)». «Riechen nach» is used with a noun (riechen nach Rosen).
Der Kuchen sieht lecker.Der Kuchen sieht lecker aus.«To look like» is «aussehen» (separable verb): the prefix «aus» goes to the end.
Ich kann die Vögel hören singen.Ich kann die Vögel singen hören.With two infinitives, the perception verb (hören) goes after the action (singen).
Das Wasser fühlt sich kalt.Das Wasser fühlt sich kalt an.«To feel (to the touch)» is «sich anfühlen» (separable). The prefix «an» goes to the end.
Es schmeckt wie süß.Es schmeckt süß.«Schmecken» + adjective is sufficient. Do not use «wie» before a predicate adjective.
