Subordinate Clauses with wenn and Giving Advice with sollen

Wenn (when/if) introduces a condition or a point in time. Like dass, the verb goes to the end.

Wenn (when):

  • Wenn ich jeden Tag übe, lerne ich schneller. (When I practice every day, I learn faster.)
  • Wenn du Fehler machst, ist das normal. (When you make mistakes, that is normal.)

Wenn (if, condition):

  • Wenn du Hilfe brauchst, frag mich. (If you need help, ask me.)

Watch the inversion! When the wenn clause starts the sentence, the main clause verb follows immediately: Wenn ich übe, lerne ich schneller.

Sollen for giving advice:

  • Du solltest jeden Tag Vokabeln lernen. (You should learn vocabulary every day.)
  • Man sollte viel sprechen. (One should speak a lot.)
  • Solltest du nicht mehr üben? (Shouldn't you practice more?)

Sollen in Konjunktiv II (solltest) softens the advice. It is more polite than the imperative.

    After a wenn clause, main clause verb comes first (inversion)

  • Du sollst mehr lernen.
    Du solltest mehr lernen.

    For advice, use solltest (Konjunktiv II), not sollst (obligation)

  • Wenn ich habe Zeit, lese ich.
    Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich.

    In the wenn clause, the verb goes to the end

  • Ich möchte sprechen fließend.
    Ich möchte fließend sprechen.

    The adverb fließend goes before the verb

  • Wen du fragst, sage ich dir.
    Wenn du fragst, sage ich dir.
