The imperative and Ich brauche

In emergency situations, two structures are essential:

The imperative (polite form with Sie):

  • Rufen Sie die Polizei! (Call the police!)
  • Rufen Sie einen Krankenwagen! (Call an ambulance!)
  • Helfen Sie mir! (Help me!)
  • Kommen Sie schnell! (Come quickly!)

The imperative with Sie = verb + Sie (same form as a question).

Ich brauche (I need) + accusative:

  • Ich brauche Hilfe. (I need help.)
  • Ich brauche einen Arzt. (I need a doctor.)
  • Ich brauche die Polizei. (I need the police.)

Emergency numbers in Germany:

  • 110 — Polizei (police)
  • 112 — Feuerwehr / Rettungsdienst (fire / emergency)

Key phrases:

  • Es ist ein Notfall! (It is an emergency!)
  • Ich bin verletzt. (I am injured.)

  • Rufen die Polizei!
    Rufen Sie die Polizei!

The polite imperative requires Sie: Rufen Sie.

  • Ich brauche ein Arzt.
    Ich brauche einen Arzt.

Brauchen takes the accusative: einen Arzt (masculine accusative).

  • Es war ein Unfall.
    Es gab einen Unfall.

For "there was", use es gab (from geben), not es war.

  • Helfen mir!
    Helfen Sie mir!

The polite imperative requires Sie: Helfen Sie mir!

  • Ich habe verloren meine Tasche.
    Ich habe meine Tasche verloren.

The past participle (verloren) goes at the end of the sentence.
