Colors and Materials
Color Adjectives
Colors are adjectives and must agree with the noun:
- white: blanc (m) / blanche (f)
- black: noir (m) / noire (f)
- green: vert (m) / verte (f)
- blue: bleu (m) / bleue (f)
- gray: gris (m) / grise (f)
Exception: Some colors are invariable (never change):
- orange, marron, rose stay the same: des chaussures marron
Position of Color Adjectives
Colors always go after the noun:
- une robe bleue — a blue dress
- un sac noir — a black bag
- des yeux verts — green eyes
Materials
Common materials with en:
- en coton — made of cotton
- en cuir — made of leather
- en laine — made of wool
- en soie — made of silk
Example: un sac en cuir noir — a black leather bag
Describing Items
Combine color + material:
- Je cherche une robe bleue en soie. — I'm looking for a blue silk dress.
- C'est un pull gris en laine. — It's a gray wool sweater.
