Dutch has rich structures for expressing ethical positions and moral judgments, essential in business ethics discussions.
Het is onaanvaardbaar dat... (It is unacceptable that...) triggers subordinate word order:
- Het is onaanvaardbaar dat bedrijven kinderarbeid tolereren.
Similar constructions with adjectives of judgment:
- Het is verwerpelijk dat... — It is reprehensible that...
- Het is onethisch dat... — It is unethical that...
- Het is prijzenswaardig dat... — It is commendable that...
Dienen te + infinitive expresses moral obligation more formally than moeten:
- Bedrijven dienen eerlijk te handelen. — Companies ought to act honestly.
Behoren te is slightly softer, expressing what should be done:
- Leiders behoren verantwoordelijkheid te nemen. — Leaders should take responsibility.
These structures allow you to articulate nuanced ethical positions in professional Dutch.
