Quantities and Shopping
Expressing quantities
Dutch uses quantity words directly before the noun (no "of"):
- een kilo appels (a kilo of apples)
- een fles water (a bottle of water)
- een stuk kaas (a piece of cheese)
- een pak melk (a carton of milk)
"Er" with quantities
- Hoeveel heeft u er? (How many do you have?)
- Ik heb er drie. (I have three of them.)
"Er" replaces the noun when a number follows.
Shopping vocabulary
- boodschappen doen — to do groceries
- de kassa — checkout/register
- het mandje — basket
- de tas — bag
- goedkoop / duur — cheap / expensive
Tip: "Te duur" means "too expensive". "Te" + adjective = "too" + adjective.
