Understanding Chinese News Headlines
Chinese news uses a special passive structure and reported speech patterns. Learn these to decode any headline!
被 (bèi) — passive voice
- Subject + 被 + agent + verb
- 嫌疑人被警察逮捕了。(Xiányírén bèi jǐngchá dàibǔ le.) — The suspect was arrested by police.
- 大桥被洪水冲毁了。(Dàqiáo bèi hóngshuǐ chōnghuǐ le.) — The bridge was destroyed by the flood.
据报道 / 据称 (jù bàodào / jùchēng) — reportedly / it is claimed
- 据报道，事故发生在凌晨。(Jù bàodào, shìgù fāshēng zài língchén.) — It is reported the accident happened at dawn.
Headline shortening: Chinese headlines often drop pronouns and drop 了:
- Full: 警察逮捕了嫌疑人 → Headline: 嫌疑人被捕
- Full: 公司宣布了新计划 → Headline: 公司宣布新计划
Key tip: 被 marks the receiver of an action. It often implies something negative happened to the subject.

आम गलतियाँ
警察被嫌疑人逮捕。嫌疑人被警察逮捕。In a 被-sentence, the receiver of the action is the subject — the police arrest the suspect, not the other way around.
被洪水桥冲毁了。大桥被洪水冲毁了。被 must be followed immediately by the agent (洪水), then the verb — do not insert the subject between 被 and the agent.
据报道发生了事件在凌晨。据报道，事件发生在凌晨。Time expressions in Chinese come after the verb-object, not at the very end — place 在凌晨 after 发生.
调查正在被进行。调查正在进行中。Not all verbs take 被 — 进行 (to carry out) uses 进行中 for ongoing actions, not 被进行.
政府被宣布新政策。政府宣布了新政策。政府 is the agent, not the receiver — 被 is not used here since the government is doing the action, not receiving it.
