False friends (faux amis) are words that look similar in French and English but have different meanings. At C1 level, you must know these to avoid embarrassing mistakes.
Critical false friends:
- Actuellement = currently (NOT actually → en fait)
- Éventuellement = possibly (NOT eventually → finalement)
- Sympathique = nice/likeable (NOT sympathetic → compatissant)
- Sensible = sensitive (NOT sensible → raisonnable)
More traps:
- Assister à = to attend (NOT to assist → aider)
- Librairie = bookshop (NOT library → bibliothèque)
- Attendre = to wait (NOT to attend → assister à)
- Supporter = to endure (NOT to support → soutenir)
In context:

Je vais à la librairie emprunter un livre.Je vais à la bibliothèque emprunter un livre.Librairie is a bookshop (where you buy). Bibliothèque is a library (where you borrow).
Le candidat cherche des gens pour supporter sa campagne électorale.Le candidat cherche des gens pour soutenir sa campagne électorale.Supporter means to endure or tolerate, not to back a cause; use soutenir to mean 'to support'.
