Citer des sources en anglais académique
Citer correctement ses sources est une obligation éthique et académique fondamentale. Deux systèmes de citation dominent dans les publications anglophones :
APA (American Psychological Association) — utilisé en psychologie, sciences sociales, éducation :
- Dans le texte : (Smith, 2021, p. 45) ou Smith (2021) argues that...
- En bibliographie : Smith, J. (2021). *Title of work*. Publisher.
MLA (Modern Language Association) — utilisé en littérature, arts, humanités :
- Dans le texte : (Smith 45) ou Smith argues that...
- En bibliographie : Smith, John. *Title of Work*. Publisher, 2021.
Formules d'attribution
Pour intégrer une citation ou une idée avec élégance :
- *As Smith (2021) argues, "..." — the implication being that...*
- *According to recent scholarship (Jones, 2020), the evidence suggests...*
- *A landmark study conducted by Chen et al. (2019) demonstrated that...*

Erreurs fréquentes
As Smith (2019) says that the results are significant.As Smith (2019) argues, the results are significant. / Smith (2019) argues that the results are significant.You cannot combine 'as' (which already introduces attribution) with 'says that' — choose one structure or the other.
As it is cited in the work of Brown...As Brown demonstrates... / Brown shows that...The passive impersonal structure 'as it is cited' is awkward — use an active attribution verb instead.
Many researchers believe that climate change is real.A growing body of researchers maintains that... / Research consistently indicates that...'Many researchers' is vague — use more precise quantifiers or formulations in academic writing.
This idea comes from Jones et al (2020).This idea is drawn from Jones et al. (2020). / This concept originates in Jones et al. (2020).'Comes from' is too informal for academic writing — use precise academic verbs.
The author references to the 2019 study.The author references the 2019 study.Le verbe reference est transitif direct en anglais — pas de préposition to après.
According to Smith, he argues that the results are valid.Smith argues that the results are valid.According to X et X argues sont redondants — il faut choisir l une des deux constructions.
