The Passive in the Present Perfect (pretérito perfecto pasivo)
In Spanish, the passive voice in the present perfect is formed with haber + sido + past participle. This structure is widely used in scientific language to describe discoveries and results.
Formation
Subject + ha/han + sido + past participle (+ por + agent)
- *El virus ha sido identificado por los investigadores.* (The virus has been identified by the researchers.)
- *Las muestras han sido analizadas en el laboratorio.* (The samples have been analyzed in the laboratory.)
Agreement
The past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject:
- *La teoría ha sido demostrada.* (feminine singular)
- *Los resultados han sido publicados.* (masculine plural)
Passive vs. Active
Compare:
- Active: *Los científicos han descubierto una nueva especie.*
- Passive: *Una nueva especie ha sido descubierta por los científicos.*
The passive is preferred when the action matters more than the agent, which is common in scientific texts.
Expresiones

- Cabe destacar que...To highlight an important result
- Los resultados arrojan que...To present conclusions

Errores frecuentes
El virus ha sido identificar por los científicos.El virus ha sido identificado por los científicos.In the passive voice, use the past participle (identificado), not the infinitive.
La teoría ha sido demostrado.La teoría ha sido demostrada.The past participle must agree with the subject: teoría is feminine, so demostrada.
Los resultados han sido publicado ayer.Los resultados han sido publicados ayer.The past participle agrees in number: resultados is plural, so publicados.
Una vacuna ha sido descubierta de los investigadores.Una vacuna ha sido descubierta por los investigadores.The agent in passive is introduced by por, never by de in this context.
El ensayo clínico ha estado realizado con éxito.El ensayo clínico ha sido realizado con éxito.The passive uses sido (ser), not estado (estar). Estar + participle indicates a resulting state, not an action.
