Hay... en... (There is / There are... in...)

The word hay is one of the most useful in Spanish. It means both "there is" and "there are" — it never changes!

  • Hay un oso en el bosque. → There is a bear in the forest.
  • Hay muchas ballenas en el océano. → There are many whales in the ocean.

Structure

Hay + noun + en + place

You do not conjugate hay. It stays the same for singular and plural.

Example: "¿Hay águilas en las montañas?" → "Are there eagles in the mountains?"

Poder / No poder for animal abilities

The verb poder (can / to be able to) is used to describe what animals can or cannot do. It is a stem-changing verb (o → ue):

  • yo → puedo
  • tú → puedes
  • él/ella → puede
  • nosotros → podemos
  • ellos/ellas → pueden
  • El águila puede volar muy alto. → The eagle can fly very high.
  • Los osos no pueden vivir en el océano. → Bears cannot live in the ocean.

Example: "Las ballenas pueden nadar miles de kilómetros." → "Whales can swim thousands of kilometres."

Expresiones

  • Hay muchos animales en la selva.Saying there are many animals somewhere
  • El lobo puede correr muy rápido.Describing an animal's ability
  • Esta especie está en peligro.Talking about an endangered species
  • Los delfines viven en el océano.Stating where animals live
  • ¿Qué animales hay en tu país?Asking about local wildlife
  • El oso es un depredador del bosque.Identifying a predator

Errores frecuentes

  • Hay son muchos animales en la selva.
Hay muchos animales en la selva.

Hay already means there are. Do not add son (are) after it.

  • El águila puede vola.
    El águila puede volar.

After poder, always use the full infinitive: volar, not vola.

  • La águila es rápida.
    El águila es rápida.

Águila starts with a stressed a, so it uses el (not la) even though it is feminine. The adjective stays feminine: rápida.

  • Los osos no poder nadar.
    Los osos no pueden nadar.

Poder must be conjugated: ellos pueden, not the infinitive poder.

  • Hay un ballena en el océano.
Hay una ballena en el océano.

Ballena is feminine, so use una, not un.
