¿Te apetece...? — Offering, accepting, declining

Offering / Suggesting

¿Te apetece + infinitive/noun? is a very common way to offer something or suggest an activity. It literally means "Do you fancy...?"

Example: "¿Te apetece bailar?" → "Do you fancy dancing?"

Example: "¿Te apetece una copa?" → "Do you fancy a drink?"

You can also use:

  • ¿Quieres + infinitive? → Do you want to...?
  • ¿Te gustaría + infinitive? → Would you like to...? (more formal)

Accepting

  • ¡Sí, me apetece mucho! → Yes, I'd love to!
  • ¡Claro que sí! → Of course!
  • ¡Genial! → Great!
  • ¡Venga, vamos! → Come on, let's go!

Declining politely

  • No, gracias, no me apetece. → No thanks, I don't feel like it.
  • Mejor no, estoy cansado/a. → Better not, I'm tired.
  • Quizás más tarde. → Maybe later.

Tip: "Apetecer" works like "gustar" — the thing you fancy is the subject:

- Me apetece una copa. (singular)

- Me apetecen unas tapas. (plural)

Expresiones

  • ¿Te apetece venir a la fiesta?To invite someone to a party
  • ¡Lo estamos pasando genial!To say you're having a great time
  • ¿Puedo traer algo?To offer to bring something as a guest
  • ¡Venga, vamos a bailar!To encourage someone to dance
  • Gracias por invitarme. To thank someone for the invitation
  • ¡Lo hemos pasado muy bien!To say you had a great time (after the event)

Errores frecuentes

  • Yo traigo una cosa.
    Yo traigo algo.

In Spanish, use "algo" (something) instead of "una cosa" in this context. "Cosa" is a concrete noun, while "algo" is an indefinite pronoun.

  • ¿Te apetece a venir?
    ¿Te apetece venir?

The verb "apetecer" is followed directly by the infinitive, with no preposition. Do not add "a" between apetecer and the infinitive.

  • Pasarlo bueno.
    Pasarlo bien.

"Pasarlo bien" is a fixed expression that uses the adverb "bien", not the adjective "bueno". You cannot substitute one for the other.

  • Sí, me apetece mucha.
    Sí, me apetece mucho.

"Mucho" functions here as an adverb (invariable), not an adjective. It modifies the verb "apetecer", so it does not agree in gender.

  • La fiesta fue muy bien.
    La fiesta estuvo muy bien.

To describe how an experience or temporary state went, use "estar" not "ser". "Fue" (ser) describes identity, "estuvo" (estar) describes a lived experience.
