Las partículas modales neerlandesas *toch* y *wel* están entre los aspectos más difíciles del neerlandés para los aprendices avanzados. Estas palabritas cargan un enorme peso pragmático.
***Toch* tiene tres usos principales: 1. Confirmación / recordatorio:** *Je komt toch?* (Vienes, ¿no?) — se busca confirmación 2. Contradicción: *Het regent, maar ik ga toch.* (Llueve, pero voy igualmente.) — expresa obstinación 3. Énfasis: *Dat is toch ongelooflijk!* (¡Pero si es increíble!) — sorpresa o indignación
***Wel* tiene dos usos principales: 1. Afirmación enfática:** *Ik heb het wel gedaan.* (Yo SÍ lo hice.) — contradice una suposición negativa 2. Atenuación: *Dat is wel een goed idee.* (La verdad es que es buena idea.) — acuerdo moderado
La dificultad: estas partículas no tienen equivalente directo en español. Transmiten actitud, emoción y posición social, algo que el español expresa con la entonación o con palabras añadidas. Dominarlas es lo que hace que un neerlandés te diga: «hablas realmente como un neerlandés».

Ik heb het gedaan (flat).Ik heb het wel gedaan.Without wel, the sentence lacks the emphatic contradiction of a negative assumption.
Het is toch niet te geloven.Dat is toch niet te geloven!Dat (not het) is the correct demonstrative when referring to a situation.
Dat wist je toch niet?Dat wist je toch?Adding niet changes meaning: toch alone = right? / toch niet = you didn't, did you?
