The Evolution of Spanish

From Vulgar Latin to modern Spanish, the language has undergone profound transformations:

  • From Latin to Castilian: Vulgar Latin spoken in the Iberian Peninsula evolved with distinctive phonetic changes (initial f- → h-: filiumhijo)
  • Arabic influence: eight centuries of Arab presence bequeathed approximately 4,000 Arabic loanwords (almohada, azúcar, alcalde, ojalá)
  • Iberian and Celtic substratum: pre-Roman languages left traces in toponymy and vocabulary
  • Colonial expansion: Spanish was enriched by indigenous loanwords (chocolate, tomate, canoa) and developed American variants
  • Americanisms: Latin American varieties created their own lexical and grammatical innovations
  • Modern evolution: anglicisms (marketing, software) and technological neologisms constantly transform the language
  • The RAE: the Royal Spanish Academy attempts to regulate evolution while accepting natural changes
