Code-switching in Russian
A true C2 speaker switches registers automatically and fluidly. Russian is particularly rich in register variation — the gap between literary and colloquial forms is one of the widest among European languages.
The Russian Register Spectrum
- Высокий/книжный стиль — literary, archaic, poetic
- Официально-деловой стиль — official, business, legal
- Научный стиль — academic, technical
- Разговорный стиль — everyday conversational
- Просторечие — non-standard, folk speech
- Жаргон — slang, in-group language
Ты vs. Вы
The ты/вы distinction is the most fundamental register shift:
- Ты — informal, to friends, family, children, peers
- Вы — formal, to strangers, superiors, older people
Switching to ты uninvited can be perceived as rude or overly familiar.
Adjusting to Context
A skilled speaker adjusts:
- Vocabulary (канцеляризмы in official contexts; жаргон with friends)
- Syntax (longer, complex sentences formally; short, elliptical informally)
- Intonation and tempo (slower, clearer formally; faster, reduced informally)

Ты не могли бы помочь?Вы не могли бы помочь?When using вы form of politeness, the verb must be plural/formal: не могли бы вы (not ты)
Позвольте представлятьсяПозвольте представитьсяAfter позвольте use the perfective infinitive представиться, not the imperfective
Я имею честь сообщатьЯ имею честь сообщитьIn official set phrases, use the perfective aspect: сообщить, not сообщать
Прошу прощениеПрошу прощенияпросить прощения — genitive case is required: прощения
Убедительно прошу тебяУбедительно прошу васубедительно прошу is a formal phrase — it requires вы, not ты
