Abstract descriptions with instrumental
The instrumental case often expresses the means or medium of artistic creation:
- написанный маслом — painted in oil
- выполненный в технике коллажа — made using collage technique
- скульптура из металла и стекла — a sculpture of metal and glass
Expressing subjective reactions formally
- произведение вызывает неоднозначные чувства — the work provokes ambiguous feelings
- сложно дать однозначную оценку — it is difficult to give a clear-cut assessment
- картина допускает множество интерпретаций — the painting admits multiple interpretations
Tip: In Russian art commentary, use неоднозначный (ambiguous, controversial) often — it is a key word for discussing contemporary art politely.

常见错误
Художник нарисовал картину маслом красками.Художник написал картину маслом.Paintings are written (написал), not drawn (нарисовал) in Russian. Also маслом already implies oil paint — красками is redundant.
Я был на выставку вчера.Я был на выставке вчера.На + prepositional case is used for locations where you are present: на выставке (at the exhibition).
Эта скульптура сделана из камень.Эта скульптура сделана из камня.Из (out of / made of) requires the genitive case: из камня.
Работа художника вдохновляет меня думать.Работа художника вдохновляет меня на размышления.Вдохновлять на что-то requires на + accusative noun, not an infinitive: на размышления (to reflection).
Эта картина относится к реализм.Эта картина относится к реализму.Относиться к requires the dative case: к реализму.
Выставка проходит с 1 по 30 марта месяца.Выставка проходит с 1 по 30 марта.Adding месяца (of the month) is redundant when the month name is already given.
