Structuring a Speech in Portuguese
At C1 level, you need to organize speeches with sophisticated structural markers that guide your audience through your reasoning.
The Three-Part Framework
Portuguese speeches follow a clear introdução – desenvolvimento – conclusão structure, but at C1, you must master the transitions between them.
Opening hooks (captação):
- Permitam-me começar com uma pergunta provocadora... — Let me begin with a provocative question...
- Imaginem por um momento que... — Imagine for a moment that...
Signposting Language
Introducing arguments:
- Em primeiro lugar / Em segundo lugar — First / Second
- O primeiro aspeto a considerar é... — The first aspect to consider is...
Adding and reinforcing:
- Acresce que... — Furthermore...
- Não só... como também... — Not only... but also...
Conceding and countering:
