The Art of Questioning in Portuguese
Socrates taught that wisdom begins with good questions. At C1 level, you must master the Portuguese structures that enable deep, probing inquiry.
Types of Questions
Closed questions — seeking confirmation:
- Será que a democracia é o melhor sistema? — Is democracy the best system?
Open questions — inviting reflection:
- O que entendemos verdadeiramente por justiça? — What do we truly understand by justice?
Dialectical questions — challenging assumptions:
- E se a premissa estiver errada desde o início? — What if the premise is wrong from the start?
Identifying Fallacies
Key fallacies to recognize and name in Portuguese:
- Ad hominem: Atacar a pessoa em vez do argumento — Attacking the person instead of the argument
- Falsa dicotomia: Apresentar apenas duas opções quando há mais — Presenting only two options when there are more
- Apelo à autoridade: Aceitar algo só porque alguém importante o diz — Accepting something only because an important person says it
- Generalização abusiva: Tirar conclusões gerais de casos específicos — Drawing general conclusions from specific cases
The Socratic Method in Portuguese
