Polish phonology has distinctive features. Polish has 8 vowels (including nasals a, e) and a rich consonant system with palatal sounds (s, z, c, dz) and the notoriously difficult clusters (prztyk, chrzan). Stress is fixed on the penultimate syllable (pe-NUL-ti-mate), with exceptions in loanwords. Historical vowel alternations (o/a: woda-woda) reflect Proto-Slavic heritage. The voiced/voiceless consonant distinction is critical (b/p, d/t, g/k). Nasal vowels (a, e) are partially denasalized in modern speech. Understanding phonology explains many spelling conventions.
