Polish has four main dialect groups: Mazovian (spoken around Warsaw), Lesser Polish (southern Poland, Krakow area), Greater Polish (western Poland, Poznan area), and Silesian (southwest). Each group has distinct phonological features. Mazovian is notable for mazurzenie, the merger of sz/cz/dz into s/c/z. Lesser Polish preserves archaic features. Greater Polish influenced the standard language. Silesian is sometimes classified as a separate language due to its heavy German influence and distinct grammar. Regional dialects are still spoken but are gradually receding as standard Polish spreads through media and education.
