Code-switching in Korean — fluidly moving between 존댓말 and 반말 — is one of the most complex social skills in the language. Native speakers switch registers constantly based on relationship, context, and even emotional state. For example, close colleagues at work might speak 반말 in private but shift to 존댓말 in formal meetings. A boss may use 반말 to a subordinate while expecting 존댓말 in return. At C2 level, you must master the trigger conditions for switching: age difference, hierarchy, intimacy level, setting (public vs. private), and mood. The fascinating phenomenon of 반존댓말 (mixing polite endings with casual content) appears in contemporary speech, especially among young urban professionals. Misreading these cues causes social friction — speaking 반말 prematurely can be deeply offensive, while over-using 존댓말 with a close friend signals emotional distance. True mastery requires lived intuition developed through sustained immersion.
