# Philosophical Questions in Korean
Korean has several grammar patterns ideal for expressing philosophical speculation.
-다면 어떨까 (What if…? / Hypothetical speculation)
Attach to a verb or adjective stem. Used to open thought experiments.
- 자유 의지가 존재하지 않는다면 어떨까? → What if free will doesn't exist?
- 인간이 불멸한다면 어떨까? → What if humans were immortal?
-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 (Cannot but / Have no choice but to)
Expresses logical inevitability.
- 전제가 잘못됐다면 결론도 잘못될 수밖에 없다. → If the premise is wrong, the conclusion cannot but be wrong.
- 의식이 없다면 자유 의지도 존재할 수밖에 없다는 주장에 동의하지 않는다. → I disagree with the claim that if there is no consciousness, free will cannot but exist.
-는 것이 아닐까 (Soft rhetorical question / Could it be that…?)
A gentle, philosophical rhetorical device to propose an idea without asserting it firmly.
- 존재의 본질은 관계에서 오는 것이 아닐까? → Could it be that the essence of existence comes from relationships?
- 의식이란 뇌의 부산물에 불과한 것이 아닐까? → Could consciousness be nothing more than a by-product of the brain?

- ~에 대한 딜레마 — the dilemma regarding ~
- 형이상학적으로 말하자면 — metaphysically speaking

常见错误
자유 의지가 없다면 어떨까요? (in a written philosophy essay)자유 의지가 없다면 어떨까?-(으)ㄹ까요? is conversational polite. In written philosophical essays, drop -요 and use the plain form 어떨까.
그것은 역설이에요.그것은 역설일 수밖에 없다.이에요 merely states a fact. 수밖에 없다 expresses logical inescapability — far more powerful when making a philosophical claim.
존재의 본질은 관계에서 온다고 생각해요.존재의 본질은 관계에서 오는 것이 아닐까?생각해요 is too assertive and informal for philosophical writing. 것이 아닐까 poses it as an open philosophical question.
