# Advanced Connectors in Korean
Advanced connectors give your Korean an academic, polished feel. Choosing the right one depends on register and logical relationship.
Cause & consequence
- 그러므로 — "therefore" — strongest, formal written only. Draws a logical conclusion.
- 증거가 부족하다. 그러므로 이 주장은 받아들이기 어렵다.
- 따라서 — "consequently" — slightly lighter, common in essays and reports.
- 비용이 증가했다. 따라서 예산을 조정해야 한다.
Contrast
- 반면에 — "on the other hand / whereas" — introduces a contrasting clause.
- 도시는 발전했다. 반면에 농촌은 쇠퇴했다.
- 이에 반해 — "in contrast to this" — more formal, used in academic writing.
- 서양은 개인주의를 강조한다. 이에 반해 동양은 집단주의를 중시한다.
- 그럼에도 불구하고 — "nevertheless" — concedes a point then maintains a position.
- 실패했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 계속 도전해야 한다.
Addition & reinforcement
- 나아가 — "furthermore / going further" — raises the argument a level.
- 이 기술은 효율적이다. 나아가 환경 문제도 해결할 수 있다.
- 뿐만 아니라 — "not only … but also" — used mid-sentence.
- 그는 성실할 뿐만 아니라 창의적이기도 하다.
Clarification & summary
- 즉 — "that is / namely" — restates or clarifies.
- 이 계획은 현실적이지 않다. 즉 실행 불가능하다.
- 결국 — "ultimately / in the end" — summarises or reveals the final outcome.
- 결국 그의 노력이 결실을 맺었다.
- 오히려 — "rather / on the contrary" — introduces an unexpected reversal.
- 쉬었더니 오히려 더 피곤해졌다.
Register note: 그러므로 and 이에 반해 belong to formal/academic writing. 따라서, 반면에, 결국 work in both written and spoken formal contexts.
