Handling Difficult Questions in Japanese
In formal Q&A sessions (質疑応答), knowing how to diplomatically deflect or address difficult questions is essential at C1 level.
~かねる (kaneru) means "find it difficult to" and is a polite way to decline or express inability. It softens refusal in professional settings.
その点についてはお答えしかねます。
I find it difficult to answer on that point. (polite refusal)
~かねない (kanenai) means "there is a risk of" or "might well." It warns about potential negative consequences.
誤解を招きかねない発言だ。
That is a statement that could well invite misunderstanding.
These patterns are opposites in meaning: かねる expresses polite inability, while かねない warns of risk. In Q&A contexts, use かねる to gracefully decline sensitive questions, and かねない to highlight potential problems. Pair them with 慎重に (cautiously) and 的確に (precisely) to navigate challenging interactions with professionalism.
