The Causative Form and Emotional Expression

Japanese uses causative forms extensively when discussing emotions, because feelings are often described as being caused by someone or something.

使役形 (causative form) is formed by adding させる to the verb stem. It expresses making or letting someone do something: 彼の言葉が私を泣かせた (His words made me cry).

させる with emotions conveys causing a feeling: その映画は観客を感動させた (That movie moved the audience).

させられる (causative-passive) expresses being made to feel something against your will: 彼の態度に怒らせられた (I was made angry by his attitude). This double construction is very common in emotional contexts.

てもらう expresses receiving an action with gratitude: 話を聞いてもらうだけで楽になる (Just having someone listen to me makes me feel better). This is key for expressing emotional support in Japanese.

Mastering these forms allows you to describe complex emotional dynamics between people.
