Describing Abilities: ことができます and Describing Habitats: に住んでいます
ことができます (can / is able to) expresses ability using verb dictionary form + ことができます: パンダは竹を食べることができます (Pandas can eat bamboo). This is interchangeable with the potential form but sounds more formal.
に住んでいます (lives in) describes where animals live: 熊は山に住んでいます (Bears live in the mountains). Use the ている form for ongoing states of habitation.
Describing animal characteristics: Use ことができます for abilities: 鳥は空を飛ぶことができます (Birds can fly in the sky). Use は...が for descriptions: 象は鼻が長いです (Elephants have long noses — lit. "As for elephants, noses are long").
に/で for locations: に marks where something exists: 森に鹿がいます (There are deer in the forest). で marks where an action takes place: 川で魚が泳いでいます (Fish are swimming in the river). Remember: いる/ある use に; action verbs use で.
