Japanese Numbers and Counting
Japanese numbers follow a logical pattern. Numbers 11-99 are combinations of the basics:
- じゅういち (11) = 10 + 1
- にじゅう (20) = 2 × 10
- さんじゅうご (35) = 3 × 10 + 5
Saying your age
Use the counter さい (sai) for age:
わたしは にじゅうごさいです。 (Watashi wa nijuugo sai desu.) → "I am 25 years old."
To ask someone's age politely:
- おいくつですか？ (Oikutsu desu ka?) → "How old are you?" (polite)
- なんさいですか？ (Nansai desu ka?) → "How old are you?" (direct)
Watch out for 4, 7, and 9
These numbers have two readings each. よん is preferred over し (which sounds like "death"), and なな is preferred over しち in most contexts.

常见错误
しさいよんさいUse よん not し for age (し sounds like death)
にじゅう ごさいにじゅうごさいNumbers combine without space before さい
わたしは 25ですわたしは にじゅうごさいですSay the number in Japanese and add さい
なんさい？おいくつですか？おいくつ is more polite when asking adults
ひゃくいちひゃくいち is correct but watch pronunciationSome numbers change sound: 300=さんびゃく not さんひゃく
