The Inverted Pyramid Structure
Italian journalism follows the piramide rovesciata (inverted pyramid), where the most newsworthy information appears first. The attacco (lead) answers the classic questions — chi, che cosa, quando, dove, perché — within the opening sentences.
Hooks and Openings
A skilled journalist crafts an aggancio (hook) that captures the reader instantly. Italian newspapers favor three opening styles: the attacco secco (dry factual lead), the attacco narrativo (narrative lead using an anecdote), and the attacco con citazione (quote lead). Each sets a different tone for the piece.
Integrating Quotations
Italian editorial conventions use the virgolette basse (« ») for direct speech. Attribution typically follows the quote: «La situazione è critica», ha dichiarato il ministro. Indirect speech uses the subjunctive: Il ministro ha affermato che la situazione era critica. Mastering this distinction elevates journalistic writing from functional to polished.
