Adapting register in real time
Code-switching in Italian means shifting between registers — formal, neutral, informal, or even dialectal — within the same conversation. A C2 speaker does this fluidly: you might begin a meeting with "La ringrazio per la disponibilità" and, once rapport is established, shift to "Dai, diamoci del tu." The skill lies in reading social cues and adjusting instantly.
Audience awareness
Every utterance has an audience. Speaking to a judge, a colleague, a child, or a friend on social media each demands a different register. Italian is particularly sensitive to this: the tu/Lei/voi distinction is only the beginning. Vocabulary, sentence length, and even verb tenses shift depending on who is listening.
Consider: "Potrebbe cortesemente indicarmi..." vs. "Scusa, sai dove...?" Both ask for directions, but the first signals deference and distance while the second signals familiarity. A C2 speaker calibrates these nuances without conscious effort, switching mid-sentence if the social context shifts — for example, when a conversation that started formally becomes friendlier.
