False Friends in Italian

False friends (falsi amici) are words that look or sound similar across languages but carry different meanings. At C1 level, these traps become subtler because the words function perfectly in grammar — only the meaning betrays the learner.

The Most Dangerous Category: Partial False Friends

Some words overlap in one meaning but diverge in another. Argomento can mean "argument" in the sense of "reasoning" but never "quarrel" (use litigio). Sensibile means "sensitive" — which coincides with one English meaning — but never "sensible" (use ragionevole).

Context Is Everything

Attualmente means "currently," not "actually" (in realtà). Eventualmente means "possibly" or "if the case arises," not "eventually" (alla fine, prima o poi). These temporal false friends cause the most communication breakdowns because the sentence remains grammatically perfect while conveying the wrong time frame.

Cultural False Friends

Bravo in Italian means "good at something" or "well done," not "brave" (coraggioso). When an Italian says Bravo!, they are praising skill, not courage. Similarly, simpatico describes someone pleasant and likeable, not someone who shows sympathy (compassionevole).

Strategy for Mastery

Keep a personal false-friend journal. When you encounter a word that resembles one in your language, verify its Italian meaning before assuming cognate status. Pay special attention to words ending in -mente, -ibile, and -ente — these suffixes produce the highest density of false friends.
