Moral expressions and the subjunctive — Business ethics
In B2 Italian, moral expressions are systematically followed by the subjunctive because they express a value judgement or a requirement regarding someone else's behaviour.
Key expressions + subjunctive
È inaccettabile che... + subjunctive → It is unacceptable that... È inaccettabile che un manager occulti un conflitto d'interessi. It is unacceptable for a manager to conceal a conflict of interest.
È fondamentale che... + subjunctive → It is fundamental that... È fondamentale che l'azienda adotti un codice etico chiaro. It is fundamental that the company adopts a clear code of ethics.
Si esige che... + subjunctive → It is required that... Si esige che tutti i dipendenti rispettino le norme di governance. It is required that all employees respect the governance norms.
Other moral expressions + subjunctive
- È essenziale che... → It is essential that...
- È inammissibile che... → It is inadmissible that...
- È necessario che... → It is necessary that...
- Si richiede che... → It is requested that...
- È doveroso che... → It is a duty that...
Invariable rule
All these expressions require the present subjunctive (for present/future) or the past subjunctive (for a past fact). È inaccettabile che abbia nascosto quell'illecito. (past subjunctive)

Si esige che tutti rispettano le regole.Si esige che tutti rispettino le regole.'Si esige che' requires the present subjunctive ('rispettino'). The present indicative ('rispettano') is incorrect after this structure.
È fondamentale che l'azienda adotta un codice etico.È fondamentale che l'azienda adotti un codice etico.'È fondamentale che' is a moral expression that always requires the subjunctive ('adotti'), not the indicative ('adotta').
Il whistleblower ha segnalato una cosa illecita.Il whistleblower ha segnalato un illecito.In law and business ethics, 'illecito' is used as a noun ('un illecito' = an unlawful act), not as an adjective. 'Cosa illecita' is possible but less precise.
È importante che l'azienda è trasparente.È importante che l'azienda sia trasparente.È importante che requires the subjunctive: sia, not the indicative è.
I lavoratori devono di rispettare le regole.I lavoratori devono rispettare le regole.Dovere is followed directly by the infinitive, without the preposition di.
