Humor and irony in Italian B2 manifest through specific linguistic structures that native speakers master intuitively.
Understatement (litotes)
Italian frequently uses phrases that ironically minimize reality.
Non è che sia proprio il massimo. (It's not exactly the pinnacle.)
Direi che c'è qualche piccolo problemino. (I'd say there's a tiny little problem.)
The diminutive -ino added to problema paradoxically amplifies the irony.
Double meaning (doppio senso)
A fundamental structure of Italian humor. A sentence has two possible readings, one literal, one implicit.
Ha una memoria da elefante. (He has a memory like an elephant — but in a critical context, it's sarcastic.)
Sarcasm through excessive praise
Che bella idea! Solo un genio poteva pensarci.
(What a great idea! Only a genius could have thought of it.) → obvious ironic tone.
Irony through understatement
Non è che tu sia rimasto proprio deluso. = You were completely devastated.
Tone and context
In Italian, irony depends heavily on prosody and context. The same sentence can be sincere or sarcastic depending on intonation.

常见错误
Stai dicendo ironicamente, vero?Stai parlando in modo ironico, vero?'Dire ironicamente' is not idiomatic. Say 'parlare ironicamente' or 'essere ironico'.
È una battuta sarcastica.È una battuta sarcastica / È un commento sarcastico.'Battuta' is correct but refers to a short joke. For an extended remark, 'commento sarcastico' is more precise.
Lui è molto humour.Lui ha molto senso dell'umorismo.'Essere humour' is an anglicism. In Italian you say 'avere senso dell'umorismo'.
Stavo scherzando solo.Stavo solo scherzando.The adverb 'solo' is placed before the verb or infinitive in standard Italian, not after.
Fa ridere a tutti.Fa ridere tutti.Fare ridere takes a direct object without a preposition: tutti, not a tutti.
È molto più divertente di che pensavo.È molto più divertente di quanto pensassi.The comparison uses di quanto + subjunctive, not di che + indicative.
