Mastering Hindi Punctuation
Hindi punctuation has evolved from its own indigenous system to incorporate many Western conventions. At C2 level, you must understand both the traditional and modern systems.
The पूर्ण विराम (pūrṇ virām) — Hindi uses the vertical bar । (called a "danda") instead of a period. The double danda ॥ marks the end of a verse or stanza in poetry. This is the most distinctive feature of Devanagari punctuation.
वह आया। (He came.) — single danda
राम और सीता वन में गए॥ (Ram and Sita went to the forest.) — double danda for verse endings
Modern punctuation borrowings — Contemporary Hindi freely uses:
- अल्प विराम (alp virām, comma): वह आया, बैठा, और चला गया।
- प्रश्नवाचक चिह्न (praśnavācak chihn, ?): क्या तुम जानते हो?
- विस्मयादिबोधक चिह्न (!): कितना सुंदर दृश्य है!
The अर्ध विराम (ardh virām, semicolon) joins related independent clauses in formal writing:
भाषा बदलती है; यह उसका स्वभाव है।
उद्धरण चिह्न (uddharan chihn) — Hindi uses both «» and "" for quotation. In literary Hindi, direct speech is often introduced by a colon and dash:
उसने कहा :— "मैं नहीं जाऊँगा।"
Parenthetical expressions using कोष्ठक (koshṭhak) work identically to English but are less common in traditional Hindi prose.
