The Post-Truth Era in Hindi Discourse
Hindi media and public discourse have developed sophisticated vocabulary for epistemic uncertainty, manipulation, and information warfare.
Hedging language (संशयसूचक भाषा):
- कहा जाता है कि... — "It is said that..." (distancing from claim)
- सूत्रों के अनुसार... — "According to sources..." (journalistic hedge)
- कथित रूप से... — "Allegedly..." (formal epistemic marker)
- माना जाता है कि... — "It is believed that..." (soft attribution)
Epistemic modality in Hindi: Hindi uses modal particles and verb forms to signal certainty levels:
- शायद / संभवतः — perhaps / possibly (low certainty)
- लगता है — it seems / appears (inferential)
- निश्चित रूप से — certainly (high certainty)
- होगा — must be / probably is (inferential certainty)
Narrative frames (कथा-ढाँचा): How a story is framed determines how it is received. प्रतिध्वनि कक्ष (echo chambers) on social media amplify existing beliefs rather than challenging them, creating ध्रुवीकरण (polarization).
Critical reading in Hindi: A C2 speaker questions not just what is said but how — looking for selection bias (पक्षपात), omission (चूक), and rhetorical framing (वाक्य-विन्यास) in both journalism and political speech.
