Geopolitics in Hindi: Diplomatic Language and Power Discourse
Hindi has a well-developed vocabulary for international relations, shaped by India's Non-Aligned Movement legacy, its strategic autonomy doctrine, and its unique position between East and West.
Diplomatic language register (राजनयिक भाषा): Official diplomatic Hindi favours passive constructions and hedged language:
- निर्णय लिया गया — "A decision was taken" (passive, no agent)
- यह अपेक्षा की जाती है कि — "It is expected that..."
- दोनों पक्षों के बीच सहमति बनी — "Consensus was reached between both sides"
Euphemistic constructions:
- सैन्य कार्रवाई → "military action" (instead of युद्ध/war)
- शांति अभियान → "peace mission" (often for military operations)
- विशेष अभियान → "special operation"
India's key geopolitical vocabulary:
- गुटनिरपेक्षता — Non-Alignment (India's founding foreign policy)
- रणनीतिक स्वायत्तता — Strategic autonomy
- वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् — "The world is one family" (ancient concept used in modern diplomacy)
- बहुध्रुवीय विश्व — Multipolar world
Geopolitical Hindi also extensively uses loanwords: संप्रभुता (sovereignty), गठबंधन (alliance), निवारण (deterrence) — all Sanskrit-derived tatsam terms giving formal weight to political discourse.
