Film Criticism in Hindi
Non-restrictive relative clauses with जो, जिसने, जिसकी, जहाँ (with comma pause) are the hallmark of formal film criticism:
- यह फ़िल्म, जो 1975 में बनी थी, आज भी प्रासंगिक है।
(This film, which was made in 1975, is still relevant today.)
- सत्यजित राय, जिन्होंने पाथेर पांचाली बनाई, एक महान निर्देशक थे।
(Satyajit Ray, who made Pather Panchali, was a great director.)
Critical vocabulary in context:
- इस फ़िल्म का कथानक बेहद जटिल है। (The plot of this film is extremely complex.)
- प्रतीकवाद का इस्तेमाल बड़ी कुशलता से किया गया है। (Symbolism has been used with great skill.)
- सिनेमेटोग्राफी लाजवाब है। (The cinematography is outstanding.)
Bollywood vs. parallel cinema (समानांतर सिनेमा):
- मुख्यधारा (mainstream) vs. समानांतर सिनेमा (art cinema)
- Key directors: श्याम बेनेगल, मृणाल सेन, गुरु दत्त, विमल रॉय
Reviews use literary present tense (साहित्यिक वर्तमान): फ़िल्म में नायक एक जटिल चरित्र है। (The hero is a complex character.)

पटकथा लेखक ने बहुत अच्छा लिखा।पटकथा बहुत अच्छी लिखी गई है।In formal criticism, passive constructions are preferred: पटकथा लिखी गई है (the screenplay was written)
